The free-style wrestling European championships are held since 1929, and present superiority in Finland becomes the 57th. USSR national team spoke at these competitions from 1966 to 1992. During this time only three times the Soviet wrestlers conceded a victory in a team competition — once to Turks (Istanbul-1967) and twice to Bulgarians (Sofia-1978, Budapest-1983).
USSR national team achieved the best result for Euro-1979 in Bucharest where in 10 categories won 8 gold and one silver medals.
In 1992 the former USSR was represented by the CIS team, and since the next season wrestlers of Russia, as well as other former federal republics, began to act on the international scene as independent teams. Since then Russian national team of 16 times came out the winner of the European championships in the overall ranking, the team of Ukraine (Minsk-1999, Varna-2005) and one time — Turkish national teams (Istanbul-1993), Georgia (Bratislava-1998) and Azerbaijan (Vilnius-2009) took priority twice.
Only once Russians didn't get to the three of prize-winners, having occupied after Georgians Turks and Ukrainians the fourth place with modest result: 1 gold, 1 silver and 3 bronze.
The Russian wrestlers showed the best result in 2006 in Moscow, having won in seven categories six gold awards and one bronze.
The champion by quantity of victories in the European championships is Bulgarian Valentin Yordanov who seven times rose on the top gear of a pedestal of these competitions. From wrestlers of the USSR and Russia with six victories on this indicator the palm is held by Buvaysar Saytiyev. Six times in the finals Kuramagomed Kuramagomedov fought, and in five of them was stronger than rivals.
From the wrestlers representing Dagestan in USSR national teams and Russia, in the championships of the continent won: on four times — Mahomed Magomedov, Mahomed Azizov, Makhach Murtazaliyev; on three times — Yury Shakhmuradov, Arsen Allakhverdiyev, Vladimir Yumin, Nasyr Gadzhikhanov; on two times — Buzay Ibragimov, Vagab Kazibekov, Bagavdin Umakhanov, Sazhid Sazhidov; one time — Ali Aliyev, Nasrullah Nasrullayev, to Ikhak Gaydarbekov, Yaragi Shugayev, Saypulla Absaidov, Magomedgasan Abushev, Elmadi Zhabrailov, Magomedsalam Gadzhiyev, Hadzhimurad Magomedov, Murad Umakhanov, Saygid Murtazaliyev, Mavlet Batyrov, Shirvani Muradov, Nariman Israpilov, Bilyal Makhov and Abdusalam Gadisov.
From the Dagestan legionaries Mahomed Ibragimov who celebrated a victory at these competitions, and twice as a part of the national team of Azerbaijan and once as a part of the national team of Macedonia three times most successfully spoke at the European championships.
Most often — seven times — the European championships took place in the territory of Germany, on six times Turkey, Bulgaria and Hungary became a venue of these competitions. Finland for the second time will receive the best wrestlers of the continent, for the first time it was in 2008 in Tampere.
