The national team of Ukraine on EYuOF in Utrecht

From July 14 to July 19 the Dutch Utrecht accepts the XII European Junior Olympic Festival (EJOF)

About 2300 young athletes take part in competitions from 49 countries. In the program of a festival of 9 sports: basketball, cycling highway, volleyball, handball, judo, track and field athletics, float, gymnastics and tennis.

Ukraineat competitions will be provided by 60 young athletes from 20 regions of our country which will compete in six sports (track and field athletics, cycling, gymnastics, judo, float and tennis).

In tournament of judoists takes part 12 Ukrainian young men and girls 1996-97, it is the maximum quota set by organizers of a festival for judo competitions. In total in Utrecht the strongest in 15 weight categories will be defined (8 - at young men and 7 - at girls). The composition of the national team of Ukraine on judo for involvement in EYuOF was created following the results of the February championship of Ukraine (U18) among cadets in Dnepropetrovsk and Cups of Europe in Zagreb (Croatia), Kiev (Ukraine), Toeplitz (Czech Republic) and Bielsko-Biala (Poland).

In the request of our national team three judoists who already rose by a podium of the championships of the continent in this age group. Less than a month ago in the kontinetalny cadet championship in Tallinn (Estonia) the silver medal in weight category to 60 kg was won by Bogdan Yadov. On last year's superiority of Europe among cadets in the Bar (Montenegro) Fedor Panko was the winner in weight category over 90 kg, and Martha Yermolaev benefited "silver" in weight category to 57 kg.

On Sunday, July 14 at Galgenwaard Stadium stadium ceremony of opening of the XII European Junior Olympic Festival (EJOF) took place. Let's mark that heavyweight judoist Feodor Panko was the standard-bearer of the Ukrainian delegation. During opening ceremony there was all as on adult Olympic Games - an oath of the athlete, the trainer, the judge, a raising of the Olympic flag under sounds of the Olympic anthem. Also it is finite, ignition of Olympic flame which sparked under bright fireworks which flew up directly in the sky, symbolizing that the XII European junior Olympic festival is open.

Judo is included traditionally into the EYuOF program, since the first competitions which took place in 1991 in Brussels (Belgium), at the initiative of the present president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Jacques Rogge who at that time headed the European Olympic committee.

The Ukrainian judoists took part for the first time in EYuOF in 1993 in the Dutch Valkensvaard. The first pancake didn't quit a lump, our young masters of a tatami seven times rose by a podium, and харьковчанин Sergey Krivich (65 kg) and Alexander Litvinenko (+ 78 kg) from Lviv became winners of competitions.

In total for years of involvement in EYuOF the Ukrainian judoists won 40 awards of different advantage - 13 gold, 8 silver and 19 bronze medals. In 2003 the leader of combined Ukraine, the world champion and Europe George Zantaraya was the winner of EYuOF in weight category to 55 kg.
