20 YEARS OF UFC: AS EVERYTHING BEGAN

The member of the Hall of Glory of UFC, Hoys Gracie, shocked the world twenty years ago, having benefited debut tournament of the organization and having visually proved that in a duel without rules the strong can win a victory not and not the most hard beating fighter.

Thus very few people know that the history UFC began not in the 93rd year, and two decades earlier.

"For the first time I arrived to the USA in 1969", - the founder of UFC, Horion Gracie recalls. "Me robbed, having taken away money and tickets for a way back so I had to be delayed here for the whole year. During this time I became more mature, and got acquainted with interesting people. No matter, that I had to sleep on the street, and packs of newspapers were a bed – then I gained invaluable life experience"

"I returned to Brazil, graduated from law school, and again went to the USA. Ten years I was engaged in that taught ju-jitsu at itself in garage. Many pupils told that their karate, boxing coachs and muay-thaw said that they shouldn't spend the time for ju-jitsu. I invited all of them in the garage that they in practice would prove about what speak. I won against all of them, and some of them, eventually, became my pupils"

"Soon I understood that I need to leave the garage if I want to advance ju-jitsu in a pattern. I needed to get on television, and then I was come to mind by thought to organize tournament where experts in different martial arts could reveal the strongest. I told about it to one of the pupils, the screenwriter and director John Milius. Guys on television very much liked this idea. It was improbable madness, but all lit up the project. We with John began to think of how to create a ring from which fighters couldn't run away. I often saw how fighters simply ran from a ring what to avoid a beating. We thought even what to build the tank with sharks or crocodiles round a ring, or to surround all a grid energized, but, as a result, we invented octagon. Besides, I clarified that in Colorado we can organize fights without gloves and rules, and my dream became reality"

"I needed to select one fighter from Gracie's clan for involvement from tournament, and all in a family persuaded to take Hiksona Gracie. It was the correct option – it would be waited by improbable success, but I selected Hoysa. I made it because it was small and lean while Hikson was huge as the tank. We shall prove that ju-jitsu is the best martial art, and the result doesn't depend on overall dimensions of the fighter. It was necessary to demonstrate, what even the small guy can beat the large rival, using ju-jitsu"

"The first UFC 1 tournament in Denver was visited by only 2 800 people, but for those times it there was the real success. We expected to sell 40 000 paid translations (PPV), and sold 85 000. We earned good money. The following tournament sold out 120 000 translations. Growth was improbable. After the second and third tournament the Forbes log called UFC the most successful franchize in the history of PPV"

"Everything changed a duel Hoysa Gracie and Dan Severn to UFC 4. We had only two hours of television translation, but there were no rounds and time limit. Two guys shall battle while one of them won't benefit. Such is there was an idea when I created UFC. The duel Hoysa and Dan was prolonged more long, than we expected, and as a result, nobody saw the last three minutes of fight as translation ended. It was scandal. We had to send holders with record and to return money"

"After that my partners, Arth Davey and Bob Meyrovits told that we shall change rules, having adjusted them to a television format, but it in a root changed all philosophy of competition. I wanted to see real duels, and my partners preferred that tournament would turn into a TV show. They financed UFC at that time, and I didn't agree with them so I had to leave. I sold the share in the company and wasn't sorry about it. Money wasn't my purpose, and I wanted only one – to show a ju-jitsu pattern"

"I didn't look UFC since 1995 when Hoys Gracie and Ken Shemrokrazoshlis of a draw after 36 minutes of fight on UFC 5, but Dana White rung me and invited to the action devoted to the 20 anniversary of the organization, and I agreed to be there. I told, "certainly, I will be there and on pleasure you I will congratulate". That fact that I don't look them tournaments, doesn't mean that it is bad. They have excellent fighters. Simply personally I executed the mission. When people around the world began to study ju-jitsu, my mission was ended"

"UFC – the most fast-growing combative show in a pattern. Dana White constructed magnificent entertainment program, but now it doesn't bear the cognitive value which the first UFC had. We had a competition between martial arts, and now it is simple competition between fighters"
